The Jackson Memorial Fund: A Legacy

The Jackson Memorial Fund was founded in 2004 to honour the memories of two very special men in our community. Fred and Ken Jackson were brothers that shared a love of all creatures great and small.

The brothers were born only two years apart and their affinity for animals exhibited itself very early in their young lives. When Ken was a young boy, he personally helped nurse an injured squirrel back to health. Veterinary services were out of reach for the family back then.

There were a number of companion dogs that shared the Jackson household over the years. Each shared his/her unique personality and loving nature with the family. All were remembered with great fondness.

It troubled Fred and Ken to see an animal in distress so there were a few rescues over time. Fred apprehended a gray-muzzled Irish Setter wandering on the road, obviously lost. He had him looked after and placed in a good home…..Ken, while out walking in the Pitt Lake area, observed a car pull up and deposit a parcel into the brush by the side of the road. As he came near the area he heard mewing. He checked it out and discovered a box with three kittens inside. They were very young and riddled with fleas. He had them checked over and cleaned up by the local Veterinarian. He then managed to find each of them a home…..Similarly, a car abandoned a white rabbit near their home. Ken and Fred tried to capture the rabbit but he wasn’t having any of it. So, instead, food was put out for him regularly and he lived for another two years having made his own burrow under some wood that was piled on the property. These acts were typical of the brothers.

This Memorial Fund was created to assist Pets and their Families in a time of need; thus, keeping with the spirit of the Jackson brothers.

Special thanks to family and friends who have donated generously to the fund and to others who continue to do so.

With thanks to Marlene Jackson for sharing her memories with us.

CANINE VACCINE RECOMMENDATIONS General Practice Preventative Medicine GUIDELINES Vaccinations (immunizations, "shots") have saved the lives of millions of dogs. Before the days of effective vaccines, dogs routinely died from distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus and complications of upper respiratory infections. Current vaccination programs protect our dogs (and us) from the threat of rabies. Newer vaccines, including those administered through the nostrils, have been developed to protect against a variety of infections.
